Armalite 2.75x20
7.62x51/5.56x45 - 2.75x - ? - Type 57(M14)/AR18

Essentialy a modified Colt 3x20 scope. Like the Colt 3x20 it was eventually replaced by a 4x20 scope in Armalite's catalogue. The scope was probably introduced by Aramlite in the 1960s, but does show in adds by the 1970s. The scope mount can be seen on rifles dated as early as 1967. Scopes can be found with elevation dials marked in both Meters and Yards.

With Police in United States.

With US soldier in South Korea in 1986. Appears to be mounted to an ad hoc AR15 carry handle adapter.

With Chinese (ROC) soldiers on Type 57 rifles (M14 copy).

With Chinese (ROC) soldier mocked up on Type 65K2 rifle.

This early AR18 manual, supposedly includes a section on a 3x sight and is marked patent pending. Armalite's patent was awarded in 1969. If anyone has photos of the full copy please send them in.

Armalite add showing the AR-180 with 2.75x20 scope. Belive this add was published in either the January 1974 or November 1976 Guns magazine.

At least two patterns of reticle were made. The inverted post is thought to have come first.

Elevation Turret

The elevation dial is either marked in Meters or Yards. It appears the Meter marking corresponds with scopes that have serial number markings on the scope base in the 670000 range.

Serial number variants

Early examples appear to have had serial numbers on top of scope, before being moved to the bottom of the mount, and lastly dropped entirely.
Bigrix at AR180S.com has a good article with some research on scopes with base mounted serial numbers.
